FIFA to host the 2022 World Cup in the winter
The Secretary-General of the Confederation of Asian Football (AFC), Peter Velappan said that FIFA should change the schedule for the World Cup in 2022, which will be held in Qatar. Reported by the Associated Press. According Velappana, the tournament needs to be in winter – in January or February.
AFC General Secretary stressed that there is no way installation of air conditioners and cooling in Qatar stadiums, where summer temperatures often exceed 40 degrees Celsius. According Velappana, some European team may boycott the tournament because of the heat.
Thus, Velappan endorsed by members of the executive committee of FIFA Franz Beckenbauer, who has previously said that the postponement of the tournament for the winter and the associated change in the calendar of European events will cost cheaper than equipping stadium cooling systems.
