Most Americans demanded to charge Julian Assange

Most Americans condemn the activities of WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange . These are the results of a survey conducted by The Washington Post in conjunction with the TV channel ABC. Results of the study summed up at The Washington Post on December 14.

The Washington Post: Americans say WikiLeaks harmed public interest; most want Assange arrested

The American public is highly critical of the recent release of confidential U.S. diplomatic cables on the WikiLeaks Web site and would support the arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange by U.S. authorities, a new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds.

Most of those polled – 68 percent – say the WikiLeaks’ exposure of government documents about the State Department and U.S. diplomacy harms the public interest. Nearly as many – 59 percent – say the U.S. government should arrest Assange and charge him with a crime for releasing the diplomatic cables.

Assange was scheduled to appear in a London courtroom Tuesday to formally contest an extradition order on sexual assault charges in Sweden. U.S. federal authorities are reportedly investigating whether Assange could be charged with violating the Espionage Act by releasing the documents, but his potential extradition to Sweden could significantly complicate any U.S. attempt to quickly try him.

A generational gap was evident among those polled, with younger Americans raised in the Internet age expressing distinct views on the matter. Nearly a third of those ages 18 to 29 say the release of the U.S. diplomatic cables serves the public interest, double the proportion of those older than 50 saying so. When it comes to Assange, these younger adults are evenly split: Forty-five percent say he should be arrested by the United States; 46 percent say it is not a criminal matter. By contrast, those age 30 and older say he should be arrested by a whopping 37-point margin.

Though Americans are divided by age, the public response to the leaks represents a rare moment of shared perspective across partisan lines. Large majorities of Democrats, Republican and independents alike see the massive document release as harmful to the public interest. Fully three-quarters of Republicans say it harms the public interest, and nearly the same proportion believes he should be arrested by the United States. Among Democrats and independents, slim majorities say the government should pursue criminal charges against Assange.

These opinions reflect a possible shift in public opinion since August, when about three-quarters of Americans told Pew pollsters that they had heard about a previous WikiLeaks release of classified documents about the war in Afghanistan. At that time, those who had heard about those cables were more evenly split on how the leaks affected the public interest: Forty-two percent said they served the public; 47 percent said they harmed the public.

The poll was conducted Dec. 9 to 12 among a random national sample of 1,001 adults. Results from the full survey have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

  1. what a bunch of bs. they say most americans based off of a 1000 people . i support assange and im american, wheres my poll?

    • I support Assange and most people I know support him.He is a very conscientious man.Of course the government is embarrassed, but show me one person who experienced harm or loss of life as a result of wikileaks exposures?-nada-nothing-nobody-
Sounds like a survey conducted by Sarah Palin and friends.
Most Intelligent Americans admire and support Julian Assange.
Whoever believes him to be a criminal had better check the Watergate story .Watergate/Cablegate.!!! Talk to Daniel Ellsberg.

      • Most people you know, i.e. not a wide array that covers the whole spectrum like a randomly generated sampling woulds. Are most people you know in the same demographic as you? Did they grow up in the same place, or similar places? are they all around the same age? What are their political stances? What income bracket do they fall into? What IQ levels do they possess? Certainly most of them live near you. All of these factors contribute to what opinions one will develope, I’m sketptical of people who make generalizations based on “everyone they know” becasue people tend to surround themselves with those who are like them in some way. That does not represent the whole of the United States.

    • Statistics is what decides the poll. A computer will generate a random group of 1000 individuals in the U.S. and they will be polled either by mail or telephone. The fact that it’s random is how they use it to express the opionion of the general public, since it covers a wide array of demographics, age groups, political stances, ect.

    • Amazing what happens when you tell the truth. What a novel concept. I like these changes that are going on in the world. Harder for the “Shadow Governments” as Presidents John Kennedy and Ike Eisenhower warn us about to operate in secrecy. I support Assange and Manning.

    • What bull shit!!. That’s a bloody lie. We want him to spill the beans on 9/11. These freaking official criminals have no shame. How many BP whistle blowers are now dead?

  2. Wiki information was gathered and distributed because it was available. This is what makes it difficult for any member of peace keep forces the maintain and operate sometimes within the camp of the terrorists or opposition. How does it make a difference what wiki did within formation? the crime was having an idiot give it to Wiki in the beginning. then look at what is taught as ethics in Graduate Schools .. make money, cheat lie go for it like on wall street. brake the rule or make a new law that works for your side. the US Marines ware night ID patches which came from a inside Washington deal. and the members of that company stole the proceeds from each other.

  3. I, too, support Assange in his work.
You can’t trust the Washington Post. They’re almost as bad as Faux News.
Transparency in government can only be a good thing.

    Free Bradley Manning!

  4. Most the people in this area of rural eastern Wa., honest and hard working folks, support him as I do. Actually when the subject comes up in conversation, which has been quite a lot lately, most people think WL’s is a God send.
We’re begining to doubt the media as well as the government and most large corporations such as banks. For the first time in my life I’m starting to really wonder what path this country is going down. Pun intended!

  6. Oh – my – god.

    Specially the government.

    O K A Y ?

WHAT DO WE LEARN IF WE LOOK OVER THE GREAT OCEAN BETWEEN EUROPE AND AMERICA? THAT ON THE WESTSIDE, A LOT OF CONSPIRACIES DURING TIME HAPPEN!

OPEN YOUR EYES! SECRETS JUST SUCK!
    US AREN’T THE WORLDS POLICE!

THE US HAVE NOT ENOUGH FACE TO TELL THE TRUTH, BECAUSE ALL THEIR BELOVED CIVILIANS WOULD SHOW THEM THIS:

    nIn

    SO FAR

  7. surely the act of publishing is not the same as doing, we dont charge people who write about crime as if they were criminals

  8. I am a 60 year old Australian, and I wholeheartedly support Julian Assange. He is a courageous genius with very high ideals. He is the best antidote to that other Australian who owns and perverts the news around the English speaking world.

  9. Everyone I’ve met in real life wants the criminals he exposed arrested.
