New York’s taxi drivers to wear bullet-proof vests
Taxi drivers who work in dangerous areas of New York, will be given a bullet-proof vests. Clothing will be get taxi drivers in criminogenic areas of the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
The initiative comes from the New York Federation of Taxi Drivers (New York Federation of Taxi Drivers). Members of the organization in the near future are going to ask the New York Police Department to provide them with more body armor.
Thus plan to protect first and foremost taxi drivers, who come to call (their cars more often colored black), rather than drivers of yellow cabs, which “pick up” passengers on streets.
The head of the New York Federation of Taxi Drivers Fernando Mateo said that against New York taxi drivers monthly committed about 300 attacks. In June 2010, was shot and killed a taxi driver, who worked in the Bronx. In December, another taxi driver in Queens was seriously injured and was robbed.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he believes this initiative is unnecessary.
