FC Schalke advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League with 3-1 victory over Valencia today. The squads entered the match with an aggregate score of 1-1, but with Schalke having gotten the decisive away goal.
Valencia opened the scoring in the 17th minute thanks to a header from Ricardo Costa, However, the German squad responded in the 40th minute when Jefferson Farfan ripped a free kick into the top left corner.
Schalke would strike again 12 minutes later when a scrum in the box knocked the ball to Mario Gavranovic. The Swiss forward swept the ball towards goal and it clanked off both posts before crossing the goalline and gave Schalke the lead.
Valencia had a couple of chances down the stretch, but could not capitalize on them and Farfan put the game away when he neatly chipped the ball over Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita Panadero in the 90th minute.
